Why do we have a theme?

In 1998, the ministers of the Konko Mission of Wailuku thought to emulate some of our sister churches and begin using an annual theme. The purpose of this theme was to serve as a guide for our personal faith practice for the year. We would also give sermons connected to this theme as part of an ongoing project to keep this theme within the hearts of the believers.

Towards the end of each year, since 1997, the ministers would discuss several themes based off of a list prepared by one of the ministers. When the theme has been decided the actual oath is prepared based on the theme and the ministers' discussion.

The theme is said after each prayer service along with the Konkokyo Declaration as a constant reminder to us of important aspects of this faith. As a reminder, as a goal, as an oath, it serves to help focus our efforts on a central theme which we can all help each other with.

Faith Practice Reminder

I will pray with a sincere and honest heart.

I will seek regular Toritsugi mediation.

I will enrich my faith by regularly attending church services and functions.

I will deepen my relationship with Kami, Konko Daijin and the Mitama.

I will strive to put more effort into my faith practice.

Note: This serves to remind us of the core attributes of good faith practice; Prayer, and Toritsugi Mediation.

While the faith practice theme changes every year, sensei reminds us that when we finish the year, we shouldn't forget the theme but instead carry it in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Going back and reading the older themes from time to time helps remind us. Thus, older themes become faith practice reminders.

Aloha
